Davos Off Piste Mountain Safety Course

This course aims to provide people with the necessary skills to safely ride off piste within the boundaries of the resort. In particular, you will learn how to judge and safely test the stability of the snow pack and learn to identify indicators that represent significant danger.

You will learn how to assess layers in the snow according to past and present environmental conditions looking closely at wind and temperature variations.  Most importantly you will master the techniques used in avalanche burial situations to rescue avalanche victims using modern transceivers and other important equipments such as probes, shovels, avalungs and other survival equipment.

Basic map reading skills will also be taught and used to access a variety of off piste terrain in safety having planned a route on a map. The opportunity to safely make descents will be reviewed daily and we’ll never rule out building a kicker somewhere as well!!

As well as making you more aware of the dangers involved in riding off piste we will improve your technical riding and understanding of riding the soft stuff to ensure you get the most out of your time in the pow!

As qualified European mountain safety leaders we regularly use the SLF.CH site to make detailed decisions about the current conditions of the snow. It’s a fantastic tool and should be used as regularly as possible when planing any off-piste adventures. Furthermore, it’s a great weather forecast site with up to the minute reports of current conditions around Davos and the rest of Switzerland.

All of our instructors are also members of REGA, the Swiss helicopter rescue service and at just 30CHF a year we suggest you sign up to!
