If you want more than just ‘vital statistics’ to prove a ski resort takes its sports seriously, then consider that Davos opened Switzerland’s first Sport high school in 1997. Top young athletes can study for academic excellence and sporting brilliance simultaneously, in disciplines including skiing, ice hockey, figure skating, snowboarding and golf (”sign me up” – Donnie!)
The 350km (200 miles) of ski trails above Davos are divided in to six areas (Parsenn, Pischa, Jakobshorn, Rinerhorn, Madrisa and Klosters) all offering something different ensuring your skiing holiday in Davos is filled with variety . The Parsenn area is the largest and most popular. It is lift-linked to the neighboring resort of Klosters, a traditional favourite of the British royal family (”I know them” – Stav!)
Most of the ski areas are reached by funiculars or cable cars with the vast majority of the skiing being above the tree-line at 1800m. Many of the trails are red and blue but experts will find several challenging blacks to test your edges and lots of marked off-piste routes to entertain you after a fresh snowfall. Make sure you check out our 15km (”that’s gonna burn” – Donnie!) descent to Kublis via our favourite run to Schiefer and ask about skiing over to Arosa in the footsteps (or should that be tracks) of the Sherlock Holmes’ creator over a century ago. Cross country skiers are also well catered for with 75km (47 miles) of trails.
Resort cams, as well as other information on conditions and events are available on Davos’s web site www.davos.ch.
Davos is one of the world’s leading snowboarding destinations. The world snowboard guide gives it 10 out of 10 and Davos received its ‘best of the alps’ a few years ago alongside only 4 others in Europe and we know exactly why….
Davos has five snowboarding hotels, four terrain parks, 2 super pipes and easy access to the most amazing back coutry riding that Europe has to offer, ask big mountain rider Jeremy Jones, who test his new line of boards here, for proof! Davos has held the Snowboarding World Championships recently and stages World Pro Tour events such as the O’Neil Evolution 6star TTR Quarter/Half pipe contests. It has officially joined the top world snowboard resorts club and needs to be seen to be believed. You can even sign up for classes in snowboarding at Switzerland’s first Sports High School!
The best boarding area on the mountain is on Jakobshorn where there is a new park with plenty of rails, boxes, kickers from small to wow! And a half pipe that gets cut EVERY NIGHT! There is a second area at the bottom of Jackobshorn at Bolgen (”great bar there too” – Donnie!) where there’s is another Super pipe (220m long, 5.5m high, 18m wide at a 17 degree pitch – “in case you were wondering” – Stav!). There are more fun parks on Parsenn, Pischa, Madrisa and Rinerhorn plus 2 boardercross circuits on Parsenn and a speed trap that gives you an immediate read out of your top speed (Donnie has the record at 103 Kmh). It doesn’t get any better than a Snowboarding holiday in Davos, book your holiday now.
